"Upadesha" is a sanskrit word akin to "darshan". It means the spiritual guidance and blessings of a Guru or Enlightened Spiritual Master. Prema Baba Swamiji has led a fascinating and successfully uplifting life. Born in Ajo, Arizona about 45 years ago as a twin, he grew up in a copper mining town. His father is half Native American and half Jewish and very much into Hinduism. He led his young son deeply into the teachings of the various paths of meditation as a Swami Yogananda disciple and SRF member.
By the age of eight, the young Prema was already experiencing samadhi and various visions of an Indian Swami then unknown to him - Swami Nagananda - whom he was to meet about fifteen years later at an ashram near Bangalore.
As he reached his twenties, he became highly skilled in the martial arts and joined a military meditation program as a remote viewer. As a child and teenager he had already begun materializing vibuthi and other objects in his hand. Through all of this he retained a great devotion to the Maha Avatar Babaji to whom he prayed many, many times.
Around the l970's, Prema Baba travelled to India and met Swami Muktananda. He was about twenty one years of age at the time. He was so highly skilled in meditation by that time that he was the only non-swami allowed to travel back to the US and run a Siddha Yoga Ashram.
After Swami Muktananda's passing, Prema Baba travelled to Presanthi Nilayam, sat in a huge crowd in Satya Sai Baba's ashram courtyard and managed to pass a letter to Him asking his invisible help in finding another Guru, being overcome by loneliness at Muktananda's absence. As a result of Satya's kind spiritual mentorship, Prema found Swami Nagananda of Bangalore - the Swami in his dreams and visions as a young boy.
The book "The Initiation" reaches its finest point, though, when Prema decides to follow a Hindu cab driver's whim and travel a long distance outside of Bangalore on his way again to Swami Nagananda's ashram (NOTE: listen to chanting from Swami Nagananda's ashram on Antarbrahmandiya) years after their first meeting. This is a common ocurrence in any city - but Prema's cab driver, Babu, was unusually enthused to take him far out of his way to a particular Krishna temple high in the mountains and very far away from Bangalore. Something not necessarily on Prema's original itinerary.
It is high in these mountains in rural India that Prema Baba Swamiji discovers the deepest meanings and the simple spiritual presence of a young Swami and several other attending Swamis - the immortal Yogi of Paramahansa Yogananda's "Autobiography of a Yogi" the Maha Avatar Babaji (otherwise known as Babaji Nagaraj in his home area of Tamil Nadu).
For what happens next, one must read this book.
The mountains of India are swathed in a sweet mist of ageless spiritual Masters and the ocassional seeker is welcomed by their unassuming and sometimes sudden presence. In the humblest surroundings, the Greatest Masters find comfort and give comfort in the familiar company of rural people and villagers.
So, too, was the spiritual journey of Prema Baba to take him deep into his own heart.
